Introduction 

Rhythmic Gymnastics is a sport that combines elements of ballet, gymnastics, dance, and apparatus manipulation. It develops graceful movement, flexibility, coordination, and dance moves combined with hand apparatus.  Hand apparatus include rope, hoop, ball, clubs, and ribbon. Rhythmic Gymnasts can be performed individually or in a group.

Aims and Objectives 

Rhythmic Gymnastics as a CCA when started young, aims to prevent undesirable developments and habits related to the body structure, at the same time, enhances the cognitive aspects as well as the physical/coordination skills of the gymnast. As a gymnast grows, she will continue to develop, extend, and refine agility, balance, coordination and flexibility which are required for higher level skills. Progressively, she will learn and develop the fundamental and higher-level gymnastics skills needed for competition. Also, she will be required to handle hand apparatus, which ensures progressive participation in competitive gymnastics. 

Gymnastics is a sport of learning a skill and then practising it to perfection. With intentional and dedicated practice of the sport, the values of self-discipline and perseverance are developed.

Gymnastics provides opportunities to develop skills in communication and team building. In a team, pupils learn to treat others with respect. These skills enable a pupil to function effectively as leaders, as well. Such leadership skills are further honed when they carry out pupil-initiated projects/events or lead during CCA Camp and Leadership Camp.

Programmes/Activities 

1.     Selection and trial training module at Primary One

 ●      How Do I Qualify for the CCA Programme?

 a.       Pupils with potential from Primary One will be identified during Physical Education lessons while pupils from other levels (P2-P4) have to attend a selection test.

b.       Upon selection, the pupil has to attend a 2 phase trial training, which is meant to be the next level of selection with higher levels of gymnastics training components included.

c.       Upon confirmation, the pupil will officially join the gymnastics team as a CCA and has to be committed to the sports.

 Note: Short-listed pupils will receive PG notification issued by the school. 

●      ^ Criteria for Attending Selection Test from P2 - P4

 RGym is a competitive sport in our school. We only accept a gymnast at higher levels if she has met the following minimum standards: 

❖    P3 - Must have passed Level 2 or equivalent

❖    P4 - Must have passed Level 3 or equivalent

 For a competitive gymnast, the recommended age to achieve level 2 competency is 8 years old under national school competition ruling. All gymnasts need to master and pass level 2 skills before they can move on to train and participate in competitions at higher levels.

2.   Competitions and 1 Performance in a year

 ●        National Primary Schools Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships

●        In-House Rhythmic Gymnastics Competition (alternate years)

●        National Day Performance or Teachers’ Day Performance

 ** Participants for competitions and performances are selected by Teacher in-charge and Coach through a series of Selection Trials conducted during CCA sessions.

Benefits 

• Reduced risks of injuries as exercises are varied and can be adapted to fit the age 

• The sport does not depend upon weather, hence can be practised both indoors and outdoors (with proper mat in use) 

• Develops the conditional and coordination skills, and to improve the flexibility of the joints 

• Cognitive and psycho/socio development 

• Contributes to the expansion of an individual’s basic sport culture

CCA Schedule

*   Pupils participating in competitions will be required to attend extended training (three times a week) from February onwards up to competition dates.

* Pupils identified by the school to represent the school for Stage events and attending RGym external training outside school will have to attend CCA once a week every Wednesday.  

**   eCCA (if applicable) is from 3 pm to 4 pm
